June 1 marks one year that we’ve been in our house. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, and at the same time, it’s hard to believe it’s ONLY been that long. In just about a year, we’ve managed to tackle a lot of projects. Here’s a look at some of the bigger things we’ve undertaken this past year:
THE KITCHEN – Our biggest accomplishment by far. We turned our dilapidated wreck of a kitchen from completely non-useful to functional, clean and bright:
That’s our kitchen before, and here’s the after:
THE BATHROOM – Not as involved a project, but good results nonetheless. We replaced the vanity, medicine cabinet, and lighting and had the shower and tub reglazed. A little painting and cleaning, and that project was wrapped up. The before:
And the after:
THE LIVING ROOM – This room wasn’t too much work. Mostly paint and a few (too many) tries at just the right colors on the fireplace. What we started with:
What we ended up with:
THE MASTER BEDROOM – This room was one of our last rooms to take on. It ended up being quite a repair job to get the dinged and crumbling walls back to shape and to strip the 80-year-old wallpaper. Here’s a before:

THE DEN/OFFICE – This is probably our favorite room. Maybe not because of the results, but mostly because of all the time we spend in here. I love the long couch we added and the built-in shelves. We read back here, watch movies, and sit and enjoy the sun. Here’s a before:
And an after or two:

THE MUDROOM – Our back stairs turned into a big project, too (don’t they all?). We ripped out linoleum, carpeted stairs, scraped and sanded hardwood landings, painted floors, installed a laundry chute, and built a mudroom bench. Top all that off with a lot of painting, and we have a new mudroom. Before:
But we didn’t only renovate entire rooms, we also did a lot of other little projects, like that modular shelving unit, which you can find instructions for here. We also:
- recovered new (to us) dining room chairs,
- built raised beds and planted a garden,
- carpeted the back stairs,
- painted a floor,
- repaired storm windows,
- installed a laundry chute,
- built a mudroom bench,
- dug up bushes,
- and lots more little day-to-day undertakings.
Wow! That’s kind of a lot of stuff. Thanks for taking an interest in the things we’re doing. We’re excited about another year to undertake even more projects. Some things still on our to-do list:
- complete the dining room,
- finish off the guest bedroom,
- add a bedroom in the basement,
- remodel the downstairs bath,
- finish the basement,
- renovate the attic,
- and tuckpoint the front steps.
That should keep us busy for a while!
